Why We Vaccinate!

We believe in vaccinating all children.  We are well aware of the two celebrity mothers with autistic children who have appeared on Larry King Live and Oprah over the past 5 months and who have implicated the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine as the cause of their children's condition.  Autism is a terrible disease and no person who has not walked in the shoes of a parent of a child with autism has a right to comment about the thoughts and feelings of such parents.  But as doctors, we do a terrible disservice to our patients and to society if we allow emotion and passion to sway what should be a rational decision.  In all other areas of medicine, decisions are made by the scientific method.  Studies are published in peer reviewed journals and given recognition based on the quality of the research presented.  To date, there have been dozens of outstanding studies that have shown no relationship between any vaccine and autism.  And those studies have looked at millions of children over many decades.

Scientists and physicians are cautious individuals by nature and by training.  When patients and their families ask us if it 100% impossible for vaccines to cause autism, the answer is ‘no' because human beings can never answer anything with 100% certainty.  But ask the same question about amoxicillin as a treatment for strep throat.  Is amoxicillin 100% safe in the treatment of strep throat and the answer once again is ‘no' because all medications have been associated with side effects. For that matter, when pediatricians tell a parent that their child has a ‘virus', we are often asked if we are 100% sure that it is not meningitis.  The answer here too, is ‘no'.  Medicine is never about certainty.  Rather, it is about probability.  And while the probability that vaccines cause autism is near 0%, the probability is near 100% that if we stop vaccinating children, there will be a huge upsurge in childhood deaths.

Safety of Singulair

We believe that Singulair is a safe medication!

One of the top medical news items (576 reported nationwide) for March 27, 2008, dealt with the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) ongoing safety review of Singulair, a medication that is used to prevent asthma and allergic rhinitis (the runny nose that accompanies seasonal allergies).  Singulair has been amongst the safest of medications used to treat asthma.  Since its introduction in 1998 after many years of study in over 11,000 children and adults, over ten million doses have been prescribed to children six months of age and above.  It is part of a class of medications called leukotriene inhibitors and works by preventing the release of histamine.  Unlike antihistamines that counteract the effect of histamines, Singulair and drugs like it, get at the allergic response one step earlier.

Daily Dose of Reading

It has been 8 years since Daily Dose of Reading began in our office as our small attempt to make a difference in the world of literacy.  Now in 14 different practices, it impacts on the lives of 150,000 children and their parents all across Northeast Ohio.  We appeal to a diverse group of families all across the spectrum of ages, races and socioeconomic groups.  It is exciting that every teen mother in Cuyahoga County receives literacy support from our program and the Free Clinic runs regular book clubs for adolescents in crisis.  Our Prescriptions for Reading are now valued by librarians all across the region and our Program Committee continues to churn out new value added programs for all age groups.  As DDR has grown, the costs associated with running our services have grown.  We have been fortunate in our ability to attract high quality grants from the Rite Aid Foundation, the Cleveland Foundation, the Help Me Grow program and many other granting agencies including United Way.  However, with a budget of close to $150,000, we have reached the point where we need to explore asking you, the direct beneficiaries of this program, to help us defray some of the costs of programming and expansion. We have an exciting new board lineup and lots of new energy.  Look forward to a Read-a-thon in the fall that will make the reading experience fun, enjoyable and helpful to DDR.  In the meantime, we ask you to be as generous as you can and send donations to our office, care of Daily Dose of Reading, 2054 South Green Road, South Euclid, Ohio 44121.
